Call for Applications: Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery [Jan 31 2010, 05:00]

The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) is now seeking candidates for the position of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

The Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (JOMS) is a peer-reviewed, monthly professional journal with a U.S. and international circulation of approximately 9,700 and a 5-year impact factor of 1.985. JOMS offers comprehensive coverage of new techniques, important developments and innovative ideas in oral and maxillofacial surgery research and practice. JOMS is also available online. Case reports and online first articles are presented at joms.org, which is maintained by the publisher.

The AAOMS Board of Trustees seeks an individual who will continue to encourage strong growth of the journal's quality, reputation and scholarship. The applicant must be a respected oral and maxillofacial surgeon and academician who is well-organized, innovative and dedicated to making JOMS indispensable to the oral and maxillofacial surgery specialty. Proven experience as an editor, associate editor, or active editorial board member on a peer-reviewed journal is essential. A willingness to work collaboratively to ensure JOMS meets the goals of the AAOMS and the publisher will be required. The applicant must also be proficient in the use of the latest electronic technology to expedite review and publication of submitted manuscripts.

Application Procedure

  • Applicants are encouraged to submit a letter of intent to apply by March 30, 2010
  • Complete application packages must be received no later than April 15, 2010
  • Application packages must include:
    • A current curriculum vitae
    • A letter (up to 1,000 words) explaining why the applicant is interested in the Editor-in-Chief position; why their background is suitable; and their vision for the future of the Journal
    • A letter of support from the applicant's institution (Department Chair or Dean) certifying that sufficient time is available for the applicant to fulfill the requirements of the Editor-in-Chief position.
  • Interviews are expected to be conducted by the AAOMS Search Committee in May, 2010. The Editor-in-Chief is expected to assume his/her duties on January 1, 2011.

OMSs needed in Haiti [Jan 20 2010, 05:00]

The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) has received several contacts from members who are interested in assisting in the Haiti relief efforts, including management of facial trauma, AAOMS has compiled the following links that may be helpful to members seeking to provide financial or on-site support to Haiti:

  • Partners in Health is currently managing the university hospital in Port-au-Prince. They have indicated a need for OMSs and have an e-mail address posted where OMSs and other doctors can forward their contact information and qualifications for on-site assistance.   • AAOMS is a sponsor of Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO). HVO has posted the following information on their website; including a link to a hospital about 50 miles outside of Port-au-Prince which has been treating earthquake victims around the clock from Port-au-Prince and neighboring towns.

  • The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has provided valuable information on their web site on the Haiti Earthquake, with updated alerts including the CDC vaccination guidelines and precautions. In addition the ACS volunteer initiative, "Operation Giving Back", has information on Haiti which includes breaking news, resources for responders, and a list of Operation Giving Back partner agencies involved in Haiti relief efforts.

In addition, InterAction has a list of organizations delivering services. Contributions are being accepted through the American Red Cross, Samaritan's Purse and Global Impact's Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, which directs the funds to agencies providing assistance.
